Interstates, State highways and county roads take us where we need to be.  Millions of miles of asphalt make these roadways nice and smooth for us to drive on. 

Mountains, hills and valleys make the construction of these highways more difficult, especially when there is solid rock in the way.  Mountains are sliced through and used to fill the valleys so the roads will be more level.  Presplitting is often used to control the highwalls.   Millions of pounds of explosives are used every year for this.
